Reposting this to make a point:”not at all impressed by Matthias’ Riding from what I saw in that qualification video. I’m sorry but as far as level of riding he’s a shell of his former self (’07-’10) . he sacrificed half cab whips to peg wheelie’s for 180 bars. if he wants to no longer call himself a flatland rider he should just quit competing and stop using sandbag- former glory points and wow factor(of hop tricks) to get him good placings and give way for other riders to get exposure.”
the link at 2:22 was impressive, for me it looked pretty good and creative, too bad he crashed. I don’t see many flatlanders push this kind of link as far as he does, and tht’s what i find interesting in his riding, he’s still bringing something new to the game,
no doubt he has talent. He’s one of the greatest flatlanders in recent history. I just want people to judge the riding thats happening and not the riding that could happen, and to also get a grasp of which”street tricks ” are hard and which aren’t..
Kinda reminds me of a few Andrew Farris runs in his last season competing. Still can drop his standby contest links when he needs to but the street influence is hurting his riding as much as its helping. That may sound negative but its not intended that way at all. I would like to see him stick with this style and see just how far he can take it. You can’t progress without taking some chances, right??
It is because he is the most famous flatlander that i’m affraid
because in my opinion this is not flatland….i’m affraid that beginner stop
riding flatland to do 180 and barspin in park because matthias said it’s cool.
I hope there isn’t such thing as a clear defintion of flatland. All we can say is that flatland happens on flat ground, and that’s the best we can do. If we ever start saying things like ‘this is not flatland’, its the end of creativity. To me flatland shouldnt have an academy of thoughts that says that this trick is flatland and this trick is not flatland.
Flatland is riding a BMX bike on a flatground, its the best definition.
a trick that 90% of street rider can do like barspin, is not a trick for a proffessionnal flatland run….
this guy is annonce like the best flatlander and he only do barspin in his contest run….
my friend street riders will laugh…
Don’t quite get the point your making guys, if Matthias is having fun doing bar spins, let him do it. You can’t say to someone, don’t have fun! Are you saying, it’s not good enough?
Maybe down the road he will do something creative with it, half cab bars to nose manual springs to mind?
well i think we could talk for hours about this, on en reparlera ensemble quentin si on se croise un jour ! j’irai a lyon cet été ou au moins pour le comin lyon.
i am trying to say that i am disappointed by matthias qualification run.
he can do what he want : )
but personnally i don’t want that flatland become that kind of run…
this is not my vision of flatland
sorry if i was hating but he was not my attention, i find this conversation very interesting
and as matthias is the “flatland ambassador” i think it’s important to ask us if we agree with the image he gives, i don’t say to him to stop what he is doing…
but i’m affraid that people think flatland is just street trick without ramp…
So, you’re saying Matthias shouldn’t be doing bar spins in his flatland run, because 90% of street riders can do that trick?
I guess we shouldn’t allow street and park riders to do hang 5s then, because 90% of flatlanders do that trick too, right?
The line between street tricks and flatland tricks are continually being blurred, to try and create a line between them saying what is and is not allowed in a flatland run makes you sound like people that said pumping should not be allowed, and we should only scuff.
Times are changing, and there’s no point in trying to stand against it. I’m not at all saying you need to go out and learn 180s and half cabs, but I just don’t see the point in judging someone negatively for doing those tricks if that’s what they’re having fun with.
@Prasheel
“judging someone negatively ”
i don’t judge matthias about that, i say that it’s disappointing to see a barspin in pro run.
this was a competition with the best rider of the world, and we see barspin…which is a basic street tricks…
the fact he has fun to do this is not the subject, and i don’t say anything against matthias with hate
i ask flatlanders if they want to see this kind of tricks in pro run…
flatland pro run have to make flatlander dream…
and i love to see tricks that i don’t understand first time…
hello guys this was a barspin !!
of course many street riders can do barspins but that is not really the point.
originality is often described as something that is not seen very often and now, when there is something that you dont see very often at a flatland contest you are still ranting about the lack of originality..
I don’t get you guys… I agree, that his flat-riding seems to have suffered due to his street riding but this is only the beginning! there is a whole new path in the barspin-section alone.
think of the many manual-combos that could include barspins. i think that there is a lot of potential for good combos and it shouldnt be kept down
you can’t say that barspin is original, george manos is orginal.
you speak about originallity, but most of the link including barspin have already been done in street.
we should work to find new moves, instead of getting street easy tricks and put it on the floor.
i think that in two weeks we will see many flat edit with barspin….
this disappoint me…
ps : sorry if my english is not always correct ; )
totally agree with kevin brill and bxmism, this could just be the beggining for more intersting stuff to come. some other rider will may be push this idea a litle further…
I don’t claim to really know anything, but it would seem Matthias is taking his riding wherever he wants to and I admire that freedom. I almost can’t blame him for reinventing himself after seeing so many riders adopt his overall style. New things take time, and I don’t think we have a right to criticize anyone for that matter, for what tricks they enjoy. I also think that it looks like Matthias’ street-inspired style is not yet fully realized, so I’m excited to see where it goes from here.
the whole purpose of a blog Jm is to have an opinion and criticize its called democracy ,we don’t always have to agree on everything ,thats it i’m done on this crap petty blog.
the street riders say takahiro should have won
http://thecomeupbmx.net/videos/2012-jomopro-finals-and-best-trick-highlights/#disqus_thread
i saw that, a street rider wouldn’t know his name, so thats a flatlander….
it says it right in the video preview frame though
now someone muttered something about us bias
why would flat goto tcu when they have flatmatters?!
terry adams matt wilhelm pete brandt gogogo

yeah Archon agree there
that link @ 2:22 is pretty dope.. wonder what comes after?
it seems like matthias was messing around not serious
if he wanted to step up he would have killed it hard
http://espn.go.com/action/bmx/blog/_/post/7845777/japan-uchino-wins-2012-jomopro
“if he wanted to step up he would have killed it hard” I guess “the would have” in his run got him 4th place?…
that must have been a sight to see.. no wonder jm was raving!
matthias was just sitting on the floor during best trick.. he was not fully there
who knows what the kid will do next? he has a lot of biking talent no matter
no doubt he has talent. He’s one of the greatest flatlanders in recent history. I just want people to judge the riding thats happening and not the riding that could happen, and to also get a grasp of which”street tricks ” are hard and which aren’t..

“Judging wasnt good at all! But I dont judge the judges, they were not pro riders so for them must be so hard!”
grasping which flat/street tricks are hard.. is it a tough thing to understand?
//
Judges
We will have have a qualified panel of expert judges for this event. Amateur classes will have three judges, and the pro class will have five.
Hiroshi.. who else??
//

how many street rider can do barspin??
how many street or flatlander rider can do hotoke link ??
for me flatland is: put impossible moves…not barspin…
matthias is a flatland ambassador
bridging the gap
give him a break
street riders dont ride like that
innovation will come in due time
be thankful he still rides flat
he did a lot for the sport
he will come up with something
It is because he is the most famous flatlander that i’m affraid

This raises the question: what is ‘Flatland’?
What moved/trricks constitutes a ‘flatland’ run,
seems to be an issue it seems here?
Ok, didn’t see Julienpoliti’s post before I hit submit..
However I might as well chime in anyhow.
a trick that 90% of street rider can do like barspin, is not a trick for a proffessionnal flatland run….
