Matti Hemmings wins the U.K. National Championships

We just wrapped up the U.K. National Championships at the Backyard jam at Junction 4 Skatepark.

Congratulations to Matti Hemmings, crowned the British Champion followed by Lee Musselwhite and James White on the podium.

Great day for U.K. flatland. The UCI Worlds in Glasgow next up in a couple of weeks, stay tuned for the runs this coming week on Flatmattersonline.

Matti Hemmings & Mark Walters take top honours: UK BMX Flatland League Round 1

It’s been a great day at Round 1 of the UK BMX Flatland League in Leicester. Congratulations to Matti Hemmings who took first place in the Pro Class, followed by James White coming out of contest retirement and looking like he’s never been out of the contest scene, and rounding out the podium, Martin Drazil all the way from Prague!
* I have the top three Pro runs, and will post up this coming week. Stay tuned!

In the Am Class, former TGM local Mark Walters hitchhiked his way to first place followed by Matthew Dyer better known as Denny, bar spin backwards infinity roll lit the crowd up, in third place Steve Rooke, a face I haven’t seen in a hell of a long time. Full results below, big thanks to Alex and Keelan for hosting the event and getting everyone together.

As James White celebrates his 50th birthday, he does in it style with this amazing retrospective mix of his riding career so far, including input from the likes of Pete Brandt, Lincoln Blacksley, Amos Burke, Jesse Puente, Chase Gouin, Jason Forde, and many more. I am on the third watch now, and notice different things within his edit that had me stoked, and had me crying with laughter, straight up Flatland at it’s best!

Distancing 2

Last week, Jason Forde invited me along with Keelan Philips, Mizo, Thomas Loison, Yinka Thomas, Amos Burke, and a few others to film two clips in a week. This was a good chance for me to try and push myself a little bit further as I return from an injury that was caused due to mechanical errors caused a crash.Stoked to be involved involved in this project, heres what Jason Forde the man behind the project had to say:

“A series of flatland BMX edits created during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Social distancing meant that we were not able to ride together as much as we would like too.These videos are made to bring us together, to share our riding clips and to motivate each other.

Riders were selected at random and given a time limit to record a fresh/new riding clip that has never used on social media.
We all had different issues to deal with while trying to get the selected clips.

I myself had to deal with my riding areas being closed off / locked or to small, dusty or trying to find the time to (while I was still working as an essential) record, early morning and late evenings for days on end.

I actually landed my clip (a link that I have never been able to complete before and always failing at the last hurdle) an hour before the deadline and struggled to walk afterwards due to injuries and exhaustion, then I would need to get home and edit.

Clips have been edited by myself, and even the music tracks have been created by a rider.

I hope you enjoy these videos as much as I enjoyed making them and appreciate the effort that has gone into them.
I want to give a big thank you to all the riders that have taken part

Lookback: June – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards

June got off to a banger with Quentin Pelorson’s Seeking Part 3 edit on June 2nd. From the opening downside whiplash pedal 5 stepped beautifully into x-ft halfpacker, this edit really caught my attention. Quite possibly my favourite line is at the 1:13 mark, I’ve already rewinded this part twice to work out what happened, I could go on and on here.

Spin London 2014 / Johann Chan Interview

Last weekend as we said “Hello Springtime” here in the UK. I was invited up to Spin London 2014 to MC some flatland shows by Jason Forde & Johann Chan, an event previously I didn’t know much about, and perhaps you don’t either. So I caught up with Johann Chan to ask him a few questions about Spin London 2014, a fun weekend with potential for the future! Read on!

What exactly is Spin London all about Johann?
Spin LDN is a bike show/event held in East London. It has lots going on: guest speakers, cycling films, photography exhibitions, a variety of activities and stands from some nice home grown brands. It’s an interesting place and a great place to showcase flat.

How did you get a flatland gig at Spin?
Last year I exhibited some photos, helped out with one of the talks, and me and Jason Forde rode in a few demos which went down really well with the crowds. When speaking to Alex Daw about Spin this year, he was cool enough invite us back.

Was it an important thing to bring flatland to a different crowd?
Spin is located at the Truman brewery, off London’s popular Brick Lane, It’s a great place to get flatland out there, getting it seen in a good location, with great surroundings.

I love riding by myself at my spot, but riding in front of people is exciting too. Flatland doesn’t need be an insular sport, after all it can be done anywhere with a good floor. I can be too complacent with riding in a certain way in the same place, and changing that can sometimes have positive effects. Plus I feel flat deserves to be seen. The Spin guys run a cool laid back event so it’s nice reconnecting flatland with the outside world on our own terms to a certain degree.

It seems with the Royal Festival Hall event & now Spin, there is a bit momentum going with your shows. You link up with Jason over at 1WM, you guys running a show team?
Jason Forde runs One wheel Motion, and he’s been getting some quality gigs, Jays pretty cool with sharing the love, so involves lots of riders, without the battle format which goes down well Recently we’ve had the opportunity to ride at the royal Festival Hall, the Design Museum and the V&A.

Our friend Alice Marsh deserves some props as well as she’s been instrumental in triggering some of these opportunities.

Besides the flatland shows what else were you involved in at Spin?
We were given a stand space in exchange for the demos, so we exhibited the Swift cruiser, Bizhouse products which we’re importing, t-shirts etc.

We set about promoting One Wheel motion, we had my computer and monitor (which looked like it’d fallen out of an office window from the 1980s) playing 1WM and other flatland videos.

Any plans after holding two show events of putting on a contest?
I’d definitely like to- I’ve always wanted to put a contest on again, I’ve been looking for an ideal London floor for years. From the Battle Vibes contest last year, you can see that there’s certainly a rider interest for it. Jams are fine but even a small amount of structure & a sound system make a huge amount of difference to an event.

How did you feel this years event went?
Last year, I showed up put some photos up, did a Q&A, rode my bike and drank beers- it was a massive doss in comparison.

This year, setting up the stand, display bikes and demos had so many logistics : liaising for the floor, looking after the stand, building and selling the product to cover peoples’ expenses. It turned it into something different.

So a lot more work this year with a sacrifice to the riding & when the main reason you enjoy BMX is for the riding, and then you have so many organisational tasks, that the riding suffers, you ask yourself, is it worth it? Having said that, it’s really exciting seeing something come together, super good to see everyone, and great to hear people talking and buzzing after the event.

Seeing all the boys, Jay perform for the crowd, and people getting stoked on flat is priceless. I’d definitely recommend trying to set up a flat demo/jam within a decent show or event.
