The John Yull Flatmattersonline Interview!

Intro: Effraim.
Interview: Todd Carter.

John Yull won three awards for the 2017 Flatmattersonline Year end awards, editorial and reader choice Most Progressive Rider and Line of the Year editorial for his Master of Creativity 2017. Being at the top, it is interesting to dig beneath and talk about the mindset riders are in to get to that level, this kind of level doesn’t just happen often and only a few make the sacrifice to achieve that level. John Yull is one of the chosen few, via some brainstorming with John and Todd Carter we came up with the following interview. Sit back grab a cuppa and show some love to John! Todd Carter caught up with John Yull during the AFA Texas weekend to talk all things Master of Creativity. Thanks a lot Todd for taking the time to interview John, this is a good one!

00:48: In this day of age of everyone being online constantly, sharing almost everything they do on a daily basis. John made the decision to stay offline.

2:13: Not stacking clips and using a strategy but instead going in hard round to round right up until the deadline.

4:07: Which round of the MOC was John most happy with?

4:46: Which round did you not like as much?

5:56: Personal satisfaction, not being happy with clips.

7:13: Riding early morning in Japan before any riders were at Meriken park so no one would see what he’s trying.

7:52: The impact of the no handed decade on social media. Did he peek in to see what was going on online during this time period?

9:46: Thoughts on judging this year’s Master of Creativity contest?

10:53: The crash section John posted from his MOC entries was brutal, was the worst slam or at least most memorable?

15:04: Focus this year after competing in MOC for the last years? What can we expect this year?

16:06: MOC not being fun, and shouldn’t be fun.

17:20: Any advice for riders on the fence, should I enter MOC or not?

18:15: If you had to pick one trick from the MOC 2017 what would it be?

19:26: Thank you’s

    • Really liked what John had to say about coming off social media, digging deep, and MOC should not be about having fun. It takes a particular type of person to do this and go through the commitment.
In a separate note it was also was really motivating to not know what the interview would be like, it was fresh to me. First time in a while I can say that as it is normally me putting together the interviews, thanks a lot again Todd for this!

  1. Shout out to both of you, excellent interview on every level! As someone who is turning 47 today and having just seen all of the slams, I have to ask, how’s the body holding up? I don’t bounce up like I used to and I don’t hit the ground with 1/100 of the intensity you do. Any measures you taking to keep the body working or anything you have changed/altered to accommodate father time? Again, this interview was really engaging all of the way through and hats off to the both of you for the video and your longterm contributions.

  2. Great interview! Very interesting to hear that John wants to ‘have fun this year’. I’m sure he’ll go hard as ever!

Rolling up on John in Japan at 8am when he was doing ‘secret’ rollades! That was worth the ticket price alone.

  3. Ha, I would’ve loved to have seen that conversation play out Paul Chamberlain…
Great insight into one of the most interesting BMX dudes around. Good work Todd Carter!

  4. THIS was SO damn RAD !! Had a feeling that ALL that M.O.C. work ……………….had a PRICE on the MIND / BODY !! Really stoked to hear EXACTLY just HOW much work , commitment , AND sacrifice went into him banging out THOSE video clips !! John has pushed the art form SO much with his M.O.C. riding , RESPECT to him !! GREAT interview Todd , as your questions were the ones ……I REALLY were curious about !! AGAIN , LOVING these exclusives , F-KN MINT , eh !!!!

  5. ALSO………………………REALLY frightening ……..that those Round 3 moves , other clips……..were NOT what John wanted , that he had even MORE difficult , high level things in mind ……….THATS a testament in ITSELF as to the LEVEL / MIND SET / SKILL that John pushes his riding to…………..AND just WHAT …………..he considers WORTHY , UP TO PAR !!! Man , THATS a HIGH-LEVEL / MARTTI mentality ……….MENTAL , hell ………I THOUGHT those WERE the variations he WANTED …………….NOW knowing they were his PLAN D variations…………………..I NOW know just how HIGH his OWN judgement bar to his OWN riding is …………as IF his riding ISNT ………HIGH-LEVEL enough !!!!
