UCI Urban Cycling World Championships – 6-10 November 2019 / Chengdu, China.

Some BIG news today, the UCI announced the inaugural UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Championships will be held as part of the next UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, which will take place on 6-10 November 2019 in Chengdu, in China. Official press release below:

“The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has the pleasure of announcing that the inaugural UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Championships will be held as part of the next UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, which will take place on 6-10 November 2019 in Chengdu, in China. The 2019 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships will thus feature BMX Freestyle Flatland, BMX Freestyle Park and Trials, three urban and dynamic disciplines.

Flatland is growing fast and has figured alongside Park on the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup programme since 2018. It involves performing tricks on a flat piece of ground, often while balancing on a single wheel.

Participants are judged on the difficulty and originality of their tricks as well as their style.

In an effort to ensure the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships programme is coherent, MTB Eliminator (XCE) will be withdrawn from this event. The format for the 2019 UCI XCE World Championships is currently under consideration and an announcement will be made at a later stage.

The UCI President David Lappartient said: “The integration of BMX Freestyle Flatland into the programme of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships marks the appearance of a new UCI World Championships for cycling. I am delighted to see this demonstration of our sport’s dynamism. In addition, the arrival of this discipline reinforces the identity of an event that was created to meet the expectations of a public that enjoys a show and to make our sport even more popular with the younger generation.”

  1. Again, I am please asking riders, know me or not, like me or not, but for the sake of not a bad Mother In Law, lol, but for the sake of our sport, as I commented last year, please let’s form a global commitee. I take this personally (I see flat as kind of my baby, having ridden since I was 11 or 12), that we have an obligation, if we truly ‘care’, I think it’s time we did this for current & future riders. So, who’s down with it or does nobody care enough?? Do we want to told how ‘our sport should be, etc etc ‘? I certainly don’t, by a group of people who aren’t riders, much less know little or nothing about flat.

  2. That’s great, no 1 shows any interest. If the governing body misrepresents flat, we’ll be reading about the complaints. If that occurs, I’ll be thinking, I told you so. People may have forgotten what the Xgames people tried to do, & did do ( read crappy tiny rough riding area). Am I the only person that loves & cares about flat so much, that I posted this last comment??

    • @ Tristan – UCI have a rider rep, and the riders get to voice their opinions whenever needed. I talk a little about all this on the Flatland Immersion podcast. It’s really positive right now.

  3. Well, if that’s the case, I really do hope the rider represents flat well, along with you to Effraim. Thanks for letting me know.

  4. RAD ! As long as the riders are runnin thangs……….THIS can be a positive /good platform for our sport / art form . Tristan , Effraim , Bart De Jong , Andy Zeiss , Shane Neville , Scott Obrien , Andy Menz , Terry , Chase , Fat Tony , Cat Fish …….all these guys would make a GREAT committee ! I ll watch the live feed …..then ramble on and on and on about every riders combos on F.B. , hahaha……seriously though Im thinking this is a really rad thing for bmx flatland !

  5. Tristan, I think you’re just assuming that it’s going in the wrong direction because things like this usually do – because they get directed by the money and power hungry. However, as long as Effraim is part of it (which he is I believe) it’ll be fine. Of course, there are a few people there with very little idea about flatland but there are also people their to school them.

  6. Paul, we really don’t know each other at all. I’ve not assumed anything, which I learnt from my teens, up until my 20s & beyond, but many within flat, long before you came to Australia, have assumed things about me, without knowing me personally for a length of time. That astounds me. I can’t help feeling protective of flat. From 1 of your past posts, it ‘seems’, you’re mates with Effraim , so if that’s the case, it’s only natural for you to support him, albeit, I don’t know Effraim at all, apart from this site, which I really respect, in regards to what he’s done & continues to do.
