  1. north america did not make it to the top third

on the other hand south america could possibly

it was good more local riders participated though

    • Interesting point, but in general it seems the US scene is on the up again. And events such as the JomoPro and now the Voodoo jam back, can only help hype riders up, get them riding. In many ways I do feel like we are starting again, 18 riders is not a bad turnout at all, thats a pretty heavy list of riders. Expert was well attended. 14 in Vet Class is good also too. Novice you would expect more, that needs to be the focus it would seem.
America is a huge country, it is hard to get around easily, props to people like the pralex crew, who regularly attend all the events and travel for hours and hours then go back to work life. Not easy.

  2. Totally correct misterpola…. America is a Continent, and sure it ain’t just the United States it’s a comun misconception / but anyway this is flatland we’re speaking here not “global domination”

    • Point taken misterpola, was merely making a point. The other point I wanted to make, and this is a small thing but quite important in the bigger picture, its good to see a podium with people smiling, (ref. Simple Session and other events), top three is awesome!

  3. why are you refering to the simple session? Were the podium-winners there not smiling?

surprised by the outcome, had wished hotoke higher but congrats to uchie and all the others

cant wait to see the contest runs to motivate me for riding!

    • Simple session was first thing that came to mind, amazing riding during the contest, and what you see is guys pissed off on the podium. How does that look? So it was good to see these guys look stoked to be top three at JomoPro.

  4. JUDGING CRITERIA
    Difficulty: Score up to 100pts
    Originality: Score up to 85pts
    Consistency: Score up to 75pts
    Maximum Total Score: 260pts

Each judge will score each rider on all three categories. Scores are calculated to give a final average that is intentionally weighted to encourage progressive riding while valuing pulled tricks and tricks in links.

guess they did weight more for style

  5. Dont want to get into a huge discussion over this but I had to use this system for Judging Expert class and I did not like it. Although the result seemed to go well the system was not something I was crazy about.

Just my thought. Move on and get ready for the next session and contest.

    Peace

  6. Best Trick

The highest score wins. This competition is not timed and is judged on style, creativity and amplitude.

    Best Rider

The Selection Session for Flatland features 18 riders who will be narrowed down to an elite 9 for the finals. The first place rider from last year’s competition will automatically qualify for the finals to round out the number of competitors at 10. The Finals will be broken into three thirty minute sessions. At the end of each session the judges will rank the riders from 1-10, then assign each rider a score from 1-100, based on aggressive execution of maneuvers: content – the number, difficulty, originality and variety of tricks successfully performed; style – the fluid linking of individual tricks; and, the use of the arena/audience. Each rider can attempt links as many times as they choose in the allotted time. Judges again rank the riders 1-10 and assign each rider a session score from 1-100. The three session scores are combined and divided by three to give each rider an overall score. Riders are ranked 1-10 on the Finals leader board.

Consistency should be built in – the more tricks you pull the higher the score anyway.

  7. I wrote a little editorial about the Best Trick contest, I don’t want to come off as spam, so I’ll copy the small paragraph here, in hopes of generating discussion. I feel that the topic is extremely relevant, and within the week, once more footage is up; it may give a clearer picture of how good this really was.

    text:

“Something happened at this contest that I feel the need to say a few words about. The Best Trick Contest at the end was one of, if not THE best thing that I have seen in recent years in the contest scene. I thought it was brilliantly conceived and executed. It cut right to the heart of the sport by pushing riders like never before; in a fast paced, thrilling format. I see it as an answer, really. The level of crowd involvement was matched only by the vibe from a few years ago at Voodoo Jam – pure electricity. I hope to see this catch on at even more contests as it seemed to be in all respects a totally badass thing. Controversy aside, I would love to hear some feedback in the coming days both from people who were there, and those that get a chance to see the footage online.

    all the best,
    jm “

  8. enter the pro class – get some solo riding time and a front row seat to the competition

probably going to regret it if you do not go to voodoo

all the riders are incredible in their own way

sucks judging / deciding: it is all interdependent – consistency, difficulty, originality

you could tell they were pushing the limits of their tricks. everyone was riding super hard

in the end you have to pick the top three. the flatland gods demand it

  9. Totally agree with Effraim but I have one small correction, America is a huge *Continent!

It’s very uncommon to consider America a continent because of the use of “America” to describe the USA. The Americas are a group of continents. People usually say the Americas if they have to group.

Otherwise, it was nice to see a contest attended outside of Japan. A PROPER contest too. Not some damn show to make some watches look cool…

  10. JM
I have a totally different view on the best trick. Not many combo’s where pulled and it was boring at times. Of course there are ways to tighten something like this up but its really not the best.
Also,, combo contest or best trick?? seems as though people get that confused.
Just my thoughts. moving on… voodoo pro last session with tope four riders should be similar to best trick just like we did in 2004. Lets see….
