Old School Sundays with Albert Retey

I regard Albert Retey as one of the all time flatland greats, and I have wanted to watch this run back for absolutely years. Big thank you to Thomas Fritcher for this upload. and many more as well from the Kenn, Trier Worlds in 1990.
Albert was hauling ass in this run and freestylin’ his way through it to boot, so much style and natural ability. Not to mention it’s been a while since an OSS post, so why not make it a good one huh?

  1. So good! I have read so many things about the Kenn contest but have not seen much for many years. Only in the the last two or three years Thomas is providing his recordings and I am so grateful for that!
I knew that Albert was amazing in 1993 and later, but this is really crazy. I mean he could do almost all the new stuff from Kevin at this time, couldn’t he?
    So impressive!

    • Yes Albert, was one of the best! Natural talent, besides doing Jones stuff. He did bring his own twist to things, that’s for me what made him stand out. Not to mention his natural style and ability to go off when it’s contest time.

  2. After driving all night from San Anto to the O.K.C. Hoffman bikes contest ,Labor Day weekend , 1995 . We all eagerly got out of our cars, trucks to session in one of the three jam circles that was going down in the parking lot . The jam circle at the end of the lot had some heavy hitters taking turns. It was the first time I saw Retey ride in person . Hop/ bar flip whiplashes , switch hand rope spins to body varial-cross mega spins , and cross backwards steam pivots to half packers were just a few of the things he was doing ( not to mention I think he was the first rider to do these .) He was just freestyling , like almost ” playing ” around on his bike . Huge smile , just enjoying the jam circle. One of our friends , Arounkanne asked him ” Hey , Albert ! Will you bust out for our us , our camera ?! ” Retey seemed bashful , humble and waited a while to do exactly that on his bike …….with EASE , haha….during prelims he wasn’t even stressing doing exactly what he’s doing here . Just freestyling . Thank you , Big-E and Thomas ! This run is TOO good ! He’s riding exactly how I like seeing cats ride their bikes…… doing ALL styles , techniques ,and tricks. Mixing it all up , improvising , BMX Flatland FREESTYLE . Dr. Retey is truly one of the greats , times 7……More O.S.S. is welcomed , Effraim . Thank you !

  3. and YES ……..I have ALL of what I’ve typed about on V.H.S. We filmed the entire weekend ! Fun fact , too. Retey was even so damn chilled during his prelim run he had come out of a line , cyclone stance ( regular side. ) and literally let his bike ” sway ” no handed until the very last second before grabbing his bars , haha. It looked like some ” smoke and mirrors ” type stuff , haha….I have an old BMX Plus magazine where they’re asking Phil Dolan who he thinks are some of the top all times BMX Flatlanders. Dolan instantly say……ALBERT RETEY….

    • You really had to see Albert ride in person, pure freestyler with so much skill and finesse! Wanted to see this run again for years, he messed up a bit sadly in finals .
