Joel Schallhorn – Experimental Sessions / Bicycular Dyslexia
Joel just sent in his final edit of 2016, and it is a good one! Here is what he had to say about this “Bicycular Dyslexia” edit:
“A common trend this past year is I have chosen trick concepts and focused on them for a few months to see what I can learn and create. I’ve done wall tricks (2 videos), decades out of tricks, pegless, ground rails, and maybe some more. I like to do this to force myself in a new direction and apply what I know to a new format.
Many years ago a realized that if I want to link any of my backwards tricks with forwards tricks fluidly I have to do forward switch to get into backwards regular. So I’ve always had a natural proclivity to doing some tricks switch and opposite. Some tricks I actually feel more comfortable switch. Knowing this I’ve always wanted to spend time focusing on tricks either way but it’s kind of a daunting task. Simple tricks become incredibly hard again. Well 4 months ago, after my pegless video project, I needed a new project so I decided that the time is now!
This video documents the tricks I’ve learned both ways and combos where I switch directions in the middle. For all tricks done either way I made sure to film the 2 on same day, same camera angle (sometimes same clip) as to show that it is true switch/oppo. No camera tricks and image reversal.
I feel like this project really helped me as a rider, gave me a new kind of bike control, expanded my repertoire and gave me a new realm of tricks, modifiers, and links to work with. One can double their tricktionary by learning everything the other way. Eventually I will do a part 2 of this. I really enjoyed this project and is probably one of my more satisfying projects.”
Scott Hagnas – Flatland At 50 Years Old
Scott Hagnas?! Some of you may remember the name from the 90’s and specifically the Infection Videos. Scott had some unwanted time off his bike which he explains below, hit play for an amazing “flatland at 50 years old!”, so good! Here’s what Scott had to say:
“Here’s an edit I put together this fall, following my 50th birthday. I rode from 1982 to 2007 very consistently, but by 2008 my elbows were in chronic pain from riding, plus I started a family and my own business, so I entered into a period of semi-retirement from BMX. I still rode between 2008-2015, but only like once every two or three months. All the time off the bike didn’t help the elbows at all, and no doctor or therapist had the answer either.
As I own a training facility, I spent my time pursuing other physical goals like improving my movement ability, strength, and conditioning. I finally solved the riddle of my elbow pain in 2015 and re-dedicated myself to the bike in spring of 2016. I am so thankful to still have fun riding and learning new things. This edit is all of either things I learned new this year, or a new spin on something I did in the past. There are a few works in progress in here also, but I wanted to get it done and on to 2017!”

Joel Schallhorn – Experimental Sessions / Happy hour
Joel Schallhorn once again makes good use of his surroundings, filmed during a week in November. Here’s what Joel had to say: “I enjoy applying my skill sets (not just as a flatlander) to other areas. This fosters growth and an expansion of one’s skills in new directions. That in turn can be reapplied back to the original skill opening new doors to possibilities taking one farther. This mindset has literally gotten me to where I am today.”
