Around 1988, a whole bunch of professional flatlanders it seemed stopped riding as much flatland and started riding street. This 2-hip contest in Santee, California features the likes of RL Osborn, Craig Campbell, Dave Voelker, Chris Moeller, Ron Wilkerson, and many others do their thing. Pretty important moment in the history of BMX.
back then, we weren’t “flatlanders”, we were “freestylers”, meaning we rode flatland, street, ramps – everything! it wasn’t until the 90’s that what we considered contest categories became specialized disciplines that a rider would focus on… my 2ยข
It was around the time RL had that big interview in freestylin’ saying he wasn’t really riding flatland anymore, and he was doing this new thing called street riding..
And got hair extensions!!!
That’s right Rich! I just remember it for that moment when it seemed RL was talking down about riding flatland. Was a big moment.
that’s probably because Kevin Jones turned pro and he knew he had no chance of winning anymore… he admitted as much in “Joe Kid on a Stingray” ๐
@Jay Marley – yes I remember RL saying that too, that’s sad his riding was just competition based.
