Before we get into the awards later on today, let’s go back! Check this Old school flatland contest on the streets of Brooklyn. From the Summer of 1988. The highlight is a great run by Ross Smith at the 10:35 mark, and all plenty more Ross footage in the post contest riding from the 16:10 mark. Other riders: Rich Vasquez, Chris Wilkes, and more.
Last night I came across this gem from the archives after a post from Brett Downs on social media caught my attention and I am so glad I sat down to watch this one.
This video highlights the best in BMX Freestyle from 1988 – 1991. Including flatland, ramps and dirt, this video has it all. Appearances by: Mat Hoffman (900 Air), Dennis McCoy and especially the double backwards whiplash to funky chicken I have wanted to see for years at the 23:24 mark!), Josh White, Dino DeLuca, Perry Mervar, Rick Moliterno, Bill Neumann, Joe Gruttola, Danny Meng, Bill Nitschke, Steve Swope, Rick Thorne, Leo Chen, Pete Brandt, Brett Foster, Joe Johnson and the Team Hip Tricks crew.
Always a treat to see what Khaled Huerta is working on and today is no exception. Peep this awesome xft jump lash line that even includes a pedal steam, something we don’t see so much of nowadays.

Big news today, Yohei Uchino and the Arkleague crew held a press conference yesterday to announce and confirm the date for Arkleague, will include Flatland of course (Flatark), Skateboarding (Skateark) and Breakdancing (BreakArk). 27th April is the date and this year it is being held at in a different city, Samukawa, Kanagawa Japan. More news as I get it, but this is the first big contest of the year!
DVD’s are pretty much a thing of the past with regard to flatland, nevertheless the nearest thing to it is the Landscapes project that Simon O’Brien and Stewart Munro and re now 2 projects now and nearing completion of the third. Would you like to be involved in the mix section? Read on..

Exciting news today, Dusty Tweedhope has just started a new Flatland Podcast. Dusty is two episodes, with the first episode a “Mic Check” test type of deal, and the second episode discusses 10 years off Flatmattersonline. Up until today I have seen this footage of Chase Gouin at the War of Stars contest back in 1989. Whilst it might not be the best run by Chase’s standards, this does give an indication of what was to follow in the years to follow. The crank a ronin to decade out at 2:03 mark is amazing!
