Top fives with Matt Wilhelm

This year at Jomopro, Matt impressed the hell out of me, right before his battle with Terry, he asked me what he should do trickwise, I pretty much told him to come out guns blazing, which is what he did! This last year, Matt’s riding has gone up a few notches, it got me psyched to see someone pushing hard for the win! It didnt work out for him that day, but it will, and real soon! A Big win is around the corner! Nuff respect due!!

Last time you rode in the rain?
I never wanted to ride in the rain before but I happened to read someone’s interview from Flatmatters that flatlanders from U.K. do rolling tricks more as it’s all the time wet there. Last time you rode with Martti Kuoppa?
It was Ground-Tactics times. When I came to Finland, I was so excited to meet Martti Kuoppa and expected to be riding and have some parties together. But maybe because of the fact that I always lived too far away from his place? I rarely even see him here.

King of Southsea repo part two!!

Great shot of Whitey, two footed dump truck in the P05!

The pro class followed, with 7 riders. I was of course on home turf, and enjoyed riding my home spot with all the riders this weekend! Myself and Keelan tied for first place, I think we both touched twice in our best runs, Keelan’s first run being his better, multiple cliff and hitch turbines, halfcab 180 hop to hang nothing, no handed crack turbine, all with signature Keelan smooth style! My second run was the betterof mine, pretty stoked to stomp the back wheel combo (check vid) as couldn’t do decades all week prior (pulled muscle in arm). I don’t really like talking about myself, and this event was not about me, it was about everyone else and the future! James White as ever rocked the house (or the park) with ultra smooth one handed whiplash juggler combos, a lovely double dump truck varial stomped, and uber close to a sick two footed dump truck straight to two footed death truck! Level vibes james?

Jason Forde had one of his best contest runs, mixed in a lil street flava with nice hop 3, lovely gadget whip to crackpacker, Mr Forde was loving it! Good to see Jay ride well! Phil Dolan treated the crowds to a sick backwards nose wheelie, which has been one of the most talked about tricks of the contests, ramp guys are still coming up to me in the park and asking how he does that, Phil???

Jason Forde, gadget whip on way to 3rd place in pro flat! photo by vlad.

Lee Wilson for me is one of the positives of Uk flat right now, coming through the expert ranks and hanging in the pro, that in itself for me deserves respect! Lee’s second run was great, lovely walkaround hitches, inside karl to steams into long combos, Lee is busting out! Stoked to see this! Sixth place went to Gabor, TGM local, rolling skills for days, he did a ton of hitch jugglers, one handed multiple whiplashes to hitch, skills!! Last place and not least was Steve Green, another TGM local mixed front and back wheel nicely, Cliff turbines, saved with bike laying down straight to decade, xft turbine mega spins shove it to regular turbine decade out, and almost hit a clean whopper (he did in practise!)

That wrapped up the pro contest, one more time big up to everyone who came and supported King of Southsea! This was my first year doing this solo, thank you to title sponsor, Flatware for their support! Deep BMX, and no doubt Chris Massey at function flatland store for some incredible prizes! The only question now is “what’s next?”. Let’s build on this…..Flat matters!!! King of Southsea will be back next year!!!

King of Southsea repo part one!!

Flatmatters presents.. The King of Southsea Flatware contest!

Wow! Recovering from one of the best weekends in a long time! King of Southsea rocked and exceded all my expectations leading into this! For all you new school peeps reading this, King of concrete ran for 17 years! It became a bit of a instuition of the English bike riding scene, over the years so many names have attended. The event was primarily organised by my dad, and he’d had enough of the grief, so the event had died, and perhaps needed to..

I got the idea and motivation to bring it back under a similar name, to keep the familiarity that the koc name had. The uk scene needed it, and more importantly the flatland needed to be smack in the middle of a BMX contest!

The weather the week leading up to the event couldn’t have been any worse, in hindsight, it kind of got all the bad weather out the way, and we thankfully had two days of sunshine. And it’s been sunshine ever since, typical September style! Thankfully we had only one lil sprinkle for 2 mins all weekend! The basic concept for flatland, was to hold the contest in between the ramps where I normally ride, the area is plenty big enough and the atmosphere I hoped would be more intimate and electric!
Portsmouth dnb kindly spun tunes all weekend long free of charge, thanks a lot guys! I know that wasn’t to everyone’s taste, but still I think it led to a great atmosphere! The first event up was Novice flatland up, with only three riders, as Chris Massey got his times mixed up, and Ashley Adams missed the novice class completely! With what was to come I think that was a good thing! Somethings are meant to happen! The format for King of Southsea, was two runs, best run counts! This ran through the entire contest, and seemed to work well! Giving the riders a chance to really go for it!

Jamming with Cunners throughout the weekend! Winding it up, spinning cyborg style!

Dave Cowell from Fareham took first place, with controlled fork wheelies, tailwhips, and won a whole host of goodies from Flatware (our title sponsor), Function flatland, and Deep BMX. Ben Thrower got bullied into entrying by yours truly and it paid off with a second place finish, bunnyhop bars, 180 hops and footjam whips, ending in a flair just for kicks! Good fun! Paul Collins ended up in 3rd place, and has progressed, working nicely on his forkwheelies.

You’ve probably seen the edit already, but Expert kicked ass and gave us all hope, that there are new kids in the UK coming through, and also older guys getting into and coming to the forefront! This got me psyched! The atmosphere was building, one really nice thing about this weekend was that I noticed all the riders were cheering for each other, I honestly don’t see that very often, I can’t remember the last time actually! The vibe was great, laidback, heavy tunes dropping all day, and the riders responded with some great riding! Yannick Chauvel came all the way from France, sleeping on the common Saturday morning before the park opened, mad man! Yannicks smooth rolling style, two footed pedal steams straddling the house were a definite highlight, he mixed it up nicely with front and back wheel combos, and the judges awarded him with first place and a stack of goodies to take back to France! Congrats Yannick!

After the contest, the TGM guys headed to the Seaside a short distance from the skatepark, Salvador Brown here, brakeless decade in the sunshine! Photo by Vlad.

King of Southsea pictorial

Couple of shots today that i’m not using in the final repo, what a weekend!! Big shoutouts to the sponsors.

Ross Penny was kind enough to send some shots of the event, above moi (matters) on hometurf, First place tie with keelan phillips, the weather was kind to us both days! Somewhat of a miracle given the week leading up to the event!

Lee put together a sick second run for 5th place in Pro flat, Lee has come up through the ranks recently, which is great to see on the UK scene. Look out for more of him on the contest circuit!

Whitey was smooth as ever, mixed in a family day out with a spot of flat in Southsea, skills to pay the bills!!!

Steve Green sometimes goes by unnoticed in the uk contests, but his time is coming, much improved, threw down whoppers, and a whole bunch of brakeless decade action! Photo by Vlad.

Be posting the repo on friday people! More pictures tommorow!
