Must Watch! Mateus Beckmann – MASTER BIKES/SAMPA BMX 2016

From the opening half cab whopper to pedalling wheelie manual 180 half cab whopper line you know this is going to be a serious edit! I’m sure a say a very similar thing every time I write about Mateus Beckmann’s riding, but this guy is at the top of sport in terms of the flat/street crossover, for example check the opposite tooth hanger at 1:17, followed by half cab truck at 1:26 not to mention the downwhip on flat to opposite smith on ledge at 1:30.

From the 2:34 the flatland side of things starts to get heavy, love the hitchhiker two footed steam hop to backwards karl fork wheelie hop to forwards hitch, simple idea, but so hard to do!

3:30 – 180 backwards manual decade out.

Hitting the rewind on this move, half cab straight backwards whopper to backwards peg manual foot jam decade out at 5:19 followed by the xft half cab half whopper 180 to xft inside steam line is amazing!

I’m in the middle of UK Champs mode, but this is worth sitting down and taking this one in! Will certainly be interesting to see where this talented kid from Brazil takes his riding in the future! It’s been another good week for edits, phew!

  1. What a f—in’ week! It may sound a strange comparison, but every time I see this guy ride I think of Will Taubin, the OG street god. Used to ride with him a bunch, and he would explode in and out of his tricks in a way that looks so similar to me to this guy. Will could also learn whatever he wanted and could kill it on a lot of different terrains.

  2. so many bangers, Mateus is definitely at the top, i like everything but my favourite line is the 2:34 hitchhiker two footed steam hop to backwards karl fork wheelie hop to forwards hitch, (as you said Effraim )simple idea, but so hard to do!

  3. Hate to be that guy but here goes… He can do his thing and he’s not under attack. I think it’s misconceptions on flatlanders perpective of what street riding is and what’s capable and not capable on different sized bike set ups. Mini park shred is not street. Not much separation from flatland on the obstacles he’s choosing to ride. My friend with a street size bike traded bikes with a similiar style rider with a smaller set up and the guy couldn’t do any of his normal tricks on a ‘normal’ size set up. Now comes the ‘normal’ size set up compared to the ‘scooter’ size set up. A whole new debate. To further my argument I have a longer/bigger bike set up and I hopped on my friends smaller set up and was doing things left and right. That motivates me to be able to do it on my ‘normal’ size set up. Back to the debate of is a ‘scooter’ size set up ‘cheating’. In flatland world no. But if you are going to cross over to what Matthias Dandois or other STREET/Flat riders are doing you need a bigger set up because the obstacles are bigger and need more speed and stability. The bikes are already small why make them smaller to make things easier?
Do your thing Beckman! It not his fault for what people say he’s doing. He’s just making edits and having a good time. But flat fans need to keep it real on what street really is. Especially to respect the dudes out there killing the streets and what street riding entails. E please don’t take this as an attack I’m just being the street ‘Devil’s Advocate’ and hopefully opening a discussion on the before mentioned.
    Thanks!

    • @ Ben q – I can see what your saying, I’m not sure if you know but I’ve rode everything for years. To me a ledge is a ledge regardless of where it is, Matteus can take that opposite tooth hanger to a ledge in the street that’s exactly the same height and its street no?
Same as the cab truck on a flat bank hip?
In the same way, I ride flatland in a skatepark, is that park riding?
I run a skatepark, and when riders use the fun box and stuff they are considered park rats, they use the ledges they are called street riders. That is just how I talk on the daily with all my bike rider friends.
My friend Benny L in regard bike set ups, uses a 20tt and uses 15mm offset, he draws a lot of influence from the flatland style. Matthias has a hybrid flat/street set up at 19.5. Ride what you want and fits you.

  4. E I agree for sure. I hope street flat progresses and I’d love to see it get to the level of ‘regular’ street riders and not rest on “he”s good for a flatlander’. Benny L is a small dude though right? There are progression limitations with a small set up as far as street goes. Also the size of the obstacle does have a huge factor as far as risk of completing the trick for sure. Dandois’ last edit was a step in that direction as far as street flat goes. I skate first and foremost so I just have a dif perspective. If we are going to cross over to street we should have a universal standard not a separate one for us. Hope that makes sense. Keep up the good work.

  5. @Ben q – The whole notion of flat street is not a new one as I am sure you know, Larry Bull springs to mind nose manual to bar off on a block in around 98. Plus Craig Campbell and many others before that in the 80’s. I can see what your saying but I think ultimately if riders are truly to do their own thing, don’t prejudge it on bike sizes or things of the same nature. Something fresh may come of it as a result.

You are always going to have that “he’s good for a flatlander” it is what it is. The same with guys like Benny L and such, if they pop a hang 5 to fakie whiplash on flat, it just comes out, that’s good for a street rider.

That opposite tooth hanger Mateus did was legit in street rider terms, so long and it was steep too.
