Flatland Tricky app – Flatmattersonline 2015 Year End Awards / Readers Choice Innovation of the Year!

On November 13th Quentin Pelorson hit me up with some exciting news for the flatland community:

“As some of you know I work in computer science. A few months ago an open-minded company gave me the opportunity to mix my passion for BMX Flatland and my work. We are building a next-gen How-To tool that I hope will help our sport and its riders. The App will be visible at the Com’in Lyon contest this weekend.”

The Flatland Tricky app was the landslide winner, for the Readers Choice for Innovation of the Year. I’m sure I speak for many for the Readers of FM when I say thanks Quentin and his team for taking the time to help flatland grow and teach the next generation with the help of this app.

Also a major shoutout to the runner up, Brandon Derbowka and his incredible seven no handed whiplashes. I never thought I would ever see that get done, possibly a triple. Flatland is incredible like that, it is already exciting to see what will unfold this year!

Next category up is Brand of the Year!

Martti Kuoppa – Flatmattersonline 2015 Year End Awards / Readers Choice Contest Run of the Year!

The biggest contest of 2015 was without a doubt the Flatark competition in Kobe, Japan, 40K on the line. So it’s no surprise to see the Readers Choice for Contest Run of the Year go to Martti Kuoppa for his final battle vs Matthias Dandois!

Congratulations Martti taking home his second medal of the awards for Flatmattersonline 2015 Year End Awards / Readers Choice Contest Run of the Year!

Who was runner up? Many of you voted for Moto Sasaki for his heroic effort on the hitchhiker kick flip to backpacker vs Matthias Dandois at Real City Spin.

Stay tuned, next category up is innovation of the year!

Martti Kuoppa – Flatmattersonline 2015 Year End Awards / Readers Choice Most Progressive Rider of the Year!

The Readers Choice for Most Progressive Rider was one of the most exciting categories I have seen yet in my three years of hosting these awards, for long periods of December 2015 it was neck and neck. I was thinking at one time I would have to award two trophies as it was a tie, but during the last days leading up to the deadline on January 4th a clear winner emerged.

Congratulations to Martti Kuoppa voted by you the Readers of Flatmatters, as the Most Progressive Rider of 2015! It seems like as good a time as any to watch the amazing ten stemlashes clip that broke the internet when he posted this on September 4th. Martti stepped up the game in 2015, bringing Must Watch tricks with amazing consistency to the contest arena, pushing the sport forward once again!

The runner up this year pushing for the top spot right until the last few days, John Yull! What an incredible year for John, if you were paying attention to the Lookback features on the site. John might have appeared more than anyone else through out the year, whether his amazing Same Thing Daily part, Limitless part with Jim McKay, the brakeless backwards decade, or his Finale part (to name a few) it was quite an incredible year.

It will be great to see where both these riders take their riding in 2016. I’m sure I speak for all the readers of FM when I say thanks to Martti and John for the motivation. Long may it continue.

The first category for the 2015 Flatmatters Online Year End Awards is the Readers Choice for Breakthrough Rider of the Year. This award is about recognising that rider that broke through to the elite of our sport, pushing himself and rising up to the cream of crop, and arriving on the big stage.

The 2015 Breakthrough Rider of the Year was pretty close this year, with all the nominees at some point being in the lead which is exciting.

Old School Sundays – King of Flatland

Great video from the archives for this weeks OSS. The King of Flatland series in the 80s and 90s featured some of the best BMX Freestyle flatland riding in the world during that period. This is a video put together by Northcoast Productions in 1988 with the Cote family that started and ran the competition series.
