Matt Wilhelm signs with Pinhead Hair Stylin’ Gel

Interview: Effraim
Photo: Provided by Matt Wilhelm.

Matt hit me up with some great news yesterday, he had this to say: “I’m psyched to represent a company that is all about promoting BMX and Flatland. Plus the company is based in my hometown of Chicago, and the products are even made here. Since I’m probably known for my spiky hair just as much as my riding, this is an awesome fit, I love it as much as I love my best back shaver.”…

As this sponsor is outside of the normal hook up flatlanders get, it seemed like the ideal time to do a short interview with Matt, and see whats up….

Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve always had spikey hair you must be pretty stoked to get a hairgel sponsor, its kind of out of the norm?
Yeah, I’m definitely psyched about it. Pinhead totally gets what flatland is all about. I’ve been approached in the past to endorse other products that I don’t believe in and turned them down. I even quit a big name shoe sponsor because I didn’t like the shoes. Pinhead is a great fit for me, and the kids always comment about my hair at demos. If you want to style your hair the same way, you can easily do so thanks to tools like Joewell Hairdressing Scissors.

Has doing AGT helped out a lot with outside of the sport sponsors?
I’m not really sure. To tell you the truth I’ve been so busy doing demos and riding that I haven’t really had a chance to send out any sponsorship feelers or promo kits. I don’t think anyone is going to come looking for your because of AGT, but it’s a good way to get your foot in the door. So many people saw that show, and I’ve heard nothing but great feedback from being on there.

What are your plans for 2012 Matt? You hitting many contests? Or are the shows taking priority these days?
I plan on hitting a couple events this year, and I really want to go to the World’s in Cologne. Last time at the Worlds I got food poisoning and the time before that I got a concussion. Hitting up all the comps is difficult because I often book my calendar of demos a year in advance. I can’t just shuffle things around with a few months notice. I really like the stuff going on with the AmFlat Circuit here in America and will continue to support that in any way I can. I’m also looking forward to hitting up Voodoo Jam.

Thanks Matt for taking the time to answer these questions so quickly. Congrats on the hook up! Good luck for this year!
