It’s been a few years since I was at the Ruhr Games, and this year’s event is just a few weeks away. The first big live flatland event on the calendar since Covid 19 began to my knowledge, so there are of course a lot of questions during these uncertain times. Today I catch up Andy Zeiss and Frank Lukas who are working on the event together, it’s time to meet the faces behind the 2021 Ruhr Games flatland organisation!!!

I am sure we all agree, Japan as a nation leads the way in introducing new riders to flatland better than anywhere else in the world. Naoto Tamaru throws down a clinic here on how to get into flatland BMX and learn some core basics with brakes and without. In my opinion, there can never be enough how to’s out there to help the next generation. Love it!

It is mad quiet at the moment, let’s call it the calm before the storm. We have nice updates nevertheless today starting with this Maehata & Taka footage from the Nagoya King of Ground back in 2004. I like the capture of Taka riding off the arena and Maehata riding onto the contest floor, that really brought a realistic view to what it’s like to compete for me, so many memories. I remember this stylish dude from the Diversion videos, enjoy this one!
Last night the sad news that UK rider, Jason Davies had passed away broke online. Jason could do it all at a high level, flatland, vert, mini, dirt, skatepark riding. During the 80’s Jason excelled in flatland, and was one of the first UK riders to make the trip stateside competing in the AFA masters and came back here in the UK swinging with a bunch of new tricks and style after each visit. During the 90’s and early 2000’s, Jason later in his career made it as vert rider, and competed in the X games for many years, living stateside.
This weeks OSS is dedicated to Jason, who helped inspire me in my younger years. Such sad news, thinking of all his family, and friends and the BMX community during this difficult time.

Some of you may be old enough to remember Andrew Faris rocking the lightweight Aluminum Schwinn Azrael frame back in the day, today there’s an exciting announcement that Viking BMX have just made a Ti frame for the man himself. As well as the frame news, it’s exciting to hear Andrew is still riding. More news to come I’m sure…
