It’s time to get into what I hope is the first of many interviews relating to the 2021 Flatmattersonline Year end awards and the winners. First up, we have Editorial Choice Breakthrough Rider of the Year, Varo Hernandez! Let’s get this rolling….
So much to love about this new edit from James White, from the creative riding style that asks the question, is this flatland or street? the no handed pedal slide at 2:15 I have never seen before, this edit just flat out made me smile. And reminded me that BMX is fun, and James looks like he’s having the most fun out and about in London. Not to mention a classic Gunshot track to boot. Go watch this one, and get there riding and creating!
Great compilation with Scottish shredder, Scott MacDonald. Scott was massively underrated back in the 80’s on the UK contest season, hit play to see what I am talking about!
Flatland is not something I expected to see at Swampfest, Chad Degroot, Jean Francois Boulainne, Bill Nitschke and many others enjoy the tight looking area at Swampfest 2022.
As we get into contest season, great to see this amazing run from Rémy Dunoyer at the recent IGI Dojo jam in Montreal, QC. Don’t sleep on this one!
Congratulations to Yu Katagiri, winner of the Chimera A Side contest this weekend in Japan followed by Kio Hayakawa and Hiroya Morizaki! Looking forward to seeing the video footage from this one!
I am excited to announce The First Annual US National Championships of Flatland BMX at the Bentonville Bike Festival in Bentonville Arkansas on June 17th – 19th. This Championship will be sanctioned by USA cycling and the UCI.
Bentonville Bike Festival is an awesome event celebrating all of bike riding disciplines and we are proud to have Flatland be a part of this event.
A $5,000 Pro purse will be provided and USA riders will have an opportunity to attain a national ranking with the UCI.
I am looking forward to seeing my fellow USA BMX Flatland riders together at one contest, showing strength and a brotherhood that’s unmatched. BMX Flatland started in the USA this is our opportunity to show the world what it means to us all.
Thank you,
Scott OBrien

Imagine being on the road for months at a time, not knowing where you will sleep, eat, where you will ride, the list goes on? The daily things we take for granted. Jean-Francois Bouilanne is a free spirit, and lives his life to the fullest. I caught up with him recently to talk about this trip across the states. Read on…

As I mentioned on the FM awards show, Breakthrough Rider of 2021 Varo Hernandez was working on a Welcome to Flybikes edit with Rafael Black and this doesn’t disappoint. Great riding with signature Varo smoothness, nice mix of locations, and quality filming and editing. Loving the last line at the 3:08, which takes unexpected twist. Great watch!
