As we reach the final part of my Decade of Flatland article, the opinions are nicely varied. Opinions are just that, opinions (we all have one)…., we are at a healthy point in the progression of flatland where new tricks are shown almost weekly on instagram, and pretty much periodically, via video parts that are shown on the site.
For me, it doesn’t matter about your bike set up, brakes or brakeless. What matters is that your out there doing it, and living the culture of flatland and contributing something. For this final part I catch up with the boss Martti Kuoppa, Lee Musselwhite, and Jean William Prevost. All three riders, have massively contributed to the artform side of flatland, video parts, contests, and also the industry side of things too. Grab a cuppa, and enjoy this final part…
In life, I always hear people say “be yourself”, “dare to be different”. Rob Ridge was ridiculed for years by the BMX fashion police, and now he’s become I would say a BMX cultural icon. He’s loved across the board. It is interesting how things like this develop over time.
I have known Rob for years, and I am sure I must say the same thing this with every post. You can see his flatland skills shine bright throughout his latest masterpiece. No one cares about about his bike set up, the use of the locking lever, and so on. It’s all about what Rob is doing on the bike, there are so many NBD’s in this I will just leave this one for the comments section. What’s your favourite move?
I will say this though, Rob is probably the most technical lip trick rider on the planet right now! And this comes from his highly skilled flatland background….
Jason Halayko is a photographer based close to the Flatpark in Samukawa, Japan. Jason gives a behind the scenes look at a photoshoot with Yu and Ryo Katagiri, and Naoto Tamaru! Something a little different than the normal riding edit frame we post…
With so many edits dropping each year, it is so easy to overlook edits in the flatland scene and just in general actually. My following post is about a photoshoot with Yu and Ryo Katagiri, Naoto Tamaru at the Flatpark, and that reminded me with the exception of the Sensual video there really has been much of Yu Katagiri on the site.
For this weeks TBT, let’s go back to his amazing edit from 2018, hit play and get stoked and this kids talent….
Welcome back!
As I said last week, the Flatmattersonline exclusive clips are building really well. When I started these clips back up in January whilst I was out in SF with Pete Brandt, I was honestly thinking I would get a couple of clips in, and there would be a dry patch with some weeks without content. So far, touch wood, I am five weeks into doing these exclusives again with no missed weeks at all!
These clips are for you, to document share and progress is all about motivating not only yourself, but those around you. Chris Vasileiou, like fellow Greek shredder, George Manos came through with a clip without being asked. These clips are really motivating me, and I hope you at home are getting something out of them. Chris looks like he’s riding at home, such a crazy looking spot to have, and the line he does looks like it’s over when he gets the the front scuff vadar move and then it switches back to frame stand tomahawk, via a move that was called a Scarlo Squeak back in the day.
Thanks to Chris for stepping up for episode 5, who’s got the next clip? Same time next week, or have I jinxed it and there will be a quiet week…..
It’s been a few months since I posted a “Classic Monday’s”, and when I think back to 2000. Mike S was a rider of top of his game both in the contest scene and video parts. His Props Groundworks part really helped inspire a whole generation of brakeless flatland in Europe, I feel years on Michael was pretty underrated, despite his numerous medals at the X Games. This part is still awesome twenty years on!
Fise just announced the dates and venues for the 2020 season, kicking off again in Hiroshima, Japan on 3-5 April. Moving onto Montpellier, France on 20-24 May, and finishing in Chengdu, China on 5-8 November 2020. Enjoy the short sweet trailer for Round 1! You can keep up to date on what events are going on throughout the year by checking the events category on our site….
This week we go back to 1988 for our OSS post, and San Francisco flatland legend, Aaron Dull’s run from the AFA in Portland, Oregon. The double backwards boomerang attempt into backyard, backwards perverted out is incredible. And the stick-b and puppet amongst other stuff, such a progressive level of riding for the time period!
