Down Underground 2020 Video Contest

When you have an hour and half to kill, watch this!!! This is so good, Shaun Jarvis, Paul Chamberlain and Joe Cicman and James McGraw discuss the results in each class from the Down UnderGround contest. I’ll leave this stickied at the top of the site as it deserves to be seen!!

2020 DownUnderGround , the Australian BMX flatland championships number 12 was a video only contest, open to all riders around the world. With the current global situation with Covid -19 travel restrictions are in place around the world and earlier this year within Australia. This made organizing a national contest problematic. We could not set a date as we never knew if or when travel restrictions would ease up in Australia and or if riders would even want to travel interstate with the current conditions. As DownUnderGround has had a video round as part of the contest for many years it was a easy decision to make 2020 a video only contest. To make the video even more special we had our contest judges live announce over the video after they had judged the video contest and the riders were placed in the video according to their contest placement. Thanks to Shaun Jarvis, Paul Chamberlain and Joe Cicman and James McGraw.

The format of the contest was easy, riders submit their video as if they were riding at a contest. No edits or multiple clips, one continual run, no less than 1 minute and no more than 2 minutes. Each rider’s video was judged by three judges using the DownUnderGround contest format. Each judge scores each category out of 20 points;
Difficulty – How difficult and complex the tricks are.
Consistency – How consistent the rider is in pulling the tricks within the contest run.(feet down, foot dab, smoothness of run)
Variety – This is left up to the judge’s discretion on what their own interpretation of variety is. This can take into account range of techniques (spinning, turbining, rolling, scuffing, stationary, pumping…) variety and range of tricks, types of tricks, combinations of tricks, front and rear wheel usage, backwards and forwards.
The best possible score from one judge per video run is 60 points. The three judges points are added together to determine the winner and place getters.

Due to the nature of the contest we knew we would get many international riders entering than Australian riders. This just made the contest so much more rad. The level of riding around the world is amazing. Some many great riders being able to showcase their riding and their riding spot. Nothing but pure radness in the video.

Thank you to DownUnderGround supporters – Freestyle Now and Colony BMX

Must Watch: The Jeep Real Games Finals

I literally just posted the results from the Jeep Real Games not even an hour ago, and the final presentation of all the finalists is online already! Yohei Uchino discusses the level of riding (unfortunately not translated), but you can work out the riding!
The riding starts at the 16 minute mark with Akira Okamura, Kio Hayakawa, Ryo and Yu Katagiri, Takahiro Enoki, Hiroya Morizaki (look out for his mind blowing new whopper move to steam!), and Naoto Tamaru!

The presentation like a TV game show style, is really awesome and a fitting way to showcase some of the best contest riding I have even seen. Congratulations to Hiroya Morizaki once again and all the finalists, absolutely mind blowing level!!!

Hiroya Morizaki wins Jeep Real Games Finals 2020

Yohei Uchino just posted the BIG news of the day, Hiroya Morizaki held onto the first place spot from qualifying to win arguably the highest level contest of the year at the Jeep Real Games. Congratulations Hiro!!!
Hiroya was followed by young rippers, Kio Hayakawa and Ryo Katagiri. The video are just dropping on instagram, so get ready to have your mind blown. I will try to get some on here if possible.

Hiroya Morizaki takes top spot in Jeep Real Games

Congratulations to Hiroya Morizaki who took the top spot in the one of the highest level contests to go down in flatland history! If you haven’t already watched the Must Watch video (entries) below this post, I suggest you get on that. Japan is on another level right now, the finals is going to be insane!!! Who is your money on?

Must Watch: Jeep Real Games Qualifying Videos

I wouldn’t normally give the “Must Watch” tag for contest footage, but wow!
Credit where credit is due, this is the most cutting edge riding I have seen back to back in a contest like this. Heavy riding from the likes of the Katagiri brothers, Hiroya Morizaki, Naoto Tamaru, Kio Hayakawa, Hidenori Ishizaki and many more. If you didn’t even know, this like statement! “Japan is leading the way!”
This is just qualifying too, do yourself a favour. Put by an hour and just watch your jaw hit the floor.

The Flatmattersonline Exclusives: 1-10

What’s up everybody?

I hope everyone is safe and well at home during this really difficult time. A couple of people shared the idea to post the first ten clips on one edit to look back over, and during this lockdown period. I have plenty of time to kill, so here are the first the clips that started back in January of this year.
These clips have become a thing, and I am really stoked on the reaction to doing these. Thanks to all the riders that taken part so far and shared their progressive lines with all of us.

Shoutouts to:

Pete Brandt
Sietse Van Berkel
George Manos

Sebastian Grubinger

The BIG news today, Yohei Uchino just win the Chimera A Side contest in Japan, in a tense final battle with Jean William Prevost. Ucchie takes the 90K home, absolutely killing it. Congratulations Ucchie!
The 2019 Flatmattersonline year end award winner, Kio Hayahawa let everyone know he has arrived on the contest scene beating Moto Sasaki in his semi final battle to take third place. If you are quick you might still catch the battles on York Uno’s story on Instagram, hopefully the battles get published on YouTube, epic contest!

The 2019 Flatmattersonline Year End Award Winners Announced!

It’s about that time where I announce the winners for the 2019 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards, both in editorial and reader categories!!!

The awards are now in their sixth year, and this year was noticeable to see the efforts of many of you to get in the mix for edit of year as the deadline drew closer. That in itself felt like a win win situation for us all….

This really is a chance for me to give something more back to the flatland community, and not just award one rider with an award. Nice in my opinion to have a mix that recognise the talent within our community, without a further a due lets get right into it!

BIG congratulations to all the winners (I will be in touch!), and also everyone who got nominated. Huge honour in my opinion to get nominated from your riding peers. Thanks again to everyone in the flatland community who took the time to vote, great to see such a healthy participation for 2019!

Review: Landscapes 3

Review: Effraim.

I am sure I write this every time I review a video, I feel it’s important to say it without trying to sound like a broken record. It really is a brave move to make an online video these days, especially if you are charging for it online. It’s quite common in skateboarding, but hasn’t filtered over to flatland really.
Landscapes 3 comes in at 1 hour 12 minutes long, I can’t even imagine how much working time that is for the creator, Stewart Munro putting all the pieces together, selecting riders going back and forth with riders gathering footage, picking the music to fit each rider, the list goes on.
