Jean-Francois Boulianne stayed almost 4 months in California this winter, you can’t beat that winter sunshine feel that California offers. Great riding and a nice edit to boot from the likes of JFB, Pete Brandt, Sean Fontenot, Gabe Weed, Joel Moody, Robert Castillo, Shayne Khajeehnoori, Rich Slezak, Ahmed Johnston and many more.
It’s time to announce the winners of the 2021 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards, as well as show some love to the nominees….
It’s a labour of love putting this together, after two weeks filming, capturing, and editing, the show is finally is done!
If you are unfamiliar with the awards, there are 5 categories in both editorial and reader choice. I made a few changes this year, adding Female Rider of the Year + Brand of the Year to the awards.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote, and congratulations to all the winners and nominees, tune into the Year end awards show to find out who won in each category!
Grab a Cuppa and I Hope you enjoy the show!

Mizo Misael dropped this nice edit from this year’s One Love Jam in Newport Beach, California. I forgot to post this despite writing the description. Featuring Bruno Zebu, James McGraw, Robert Reilly, Bert Ribul, Sean Fontenot, Mizo himself shredding on Bruno’s bike, Pete Brandt, Lucas Koala, good vibes from Cali!

The level went up several notches for the final round of the 2016 Master of Creativity contest, so amazing to see every rider push their level, and ultimately bring a whole bunch of new tricks to flatland! Here is the 13th through till 6th place edit Martti Kuoppa just put together, so proud to be involved in this amazing event for flatland that has without a doubt brought the most progressive riding of the year out and motivated us all! Respect to everyone!!
My personal favourite lines:
Forkone: Fire hydrant chick whips stem lash at 00:28.
Kevin Jacob: Nose stemlash nose g-turn at 00:58.
Hidenori Ishizaki: Xft pedal backwards facing backyard jump to pegs backwards backyard degroot undertaker out at 1:07.
Sakis Doumas: Hitch darkside to no footed dump truck kneeling on pedal at 1:51!
Will Redd: The Mix of the old school with Xft forward side glide to the contemporary 360 pivot to halfpacker + the following elbow glide turbine line is so good!
Sean Fontenot: Xft cab line to decade off the pedals around the 2:57 mark!
James White: Xft lawn flip gliding gerator to whiteski smith decade to xft hitch juggler flip back to xft lawn gliding gerator to whiteski decade out at 3:06!
Kazuya Hirayama: The opening xft backward spinning lawn stubble duck to gliding gerator to forward death truck out at 3:40 is beautiful! Followed by backwards opposite spinning lawn direct to pedal death truck! Wow!
DVD’s in the modern era are a sad rarity in our scene from my perspective, during the last two years you can count those on less than one hand. Dane Beardsley’s Same thing daily project and IGI’s travel video are all we have had. Stewart Munro from Australia stepped up to the plate with an ambitious project to collect and edit together rider sections from all the planet, when you think about that in the modern internet culture and free edits available everyday it almost seems like a thankless task.
Thankfully Stewart stuck to the task which being so far away from all the other riders is I can imagine a tough task to collate together. The downloadable video straight to your laptop is catching on in other sports such as Skateboarding, more recently massive companies such as Adidas are releasing their projects for a small fee online. Will it catch on to what is essentially a small flatland audience? Only time will tell…
We published Part 1 & 2 of Bene Pfriem’s winter trip to California just the other day, and Bene is already back with the 3rd and 4th parts with great riding from the likes of Sean Fontenot, Bobby Carter, Bene himself, Lalo Jimenez, Todd Carter and the real stand out for me Pedro Melo, his part starts around the 2:02 mark on Part 4 plus many more riders soaking up the Cali sunshine. Awesome!
