June got off to a banger with Quentin Pelorson’s Seeking Part 3 edit on June 2nd. From the opening downside whiplash pedal 5 stepped beautifully into x-ft halfpacker, this edit really caught my attention. Quite possibly my favourite line is at the 1:13 mark, I’ve already rewinded this part twice to work out what happened, I could go on and on here.

Lookback: May – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards
Springtime is here, and as we all look forward to the summertime. The contests are more frequent, everyone is getting more riding time, and the content on FM grows.
It’s not often we kick off month with a Must Watch edit, but we did that in May of this year, and boy was it a treat!
Japanese flatland legend, Hiroya Morizaki teamed up with Taichi Kunieda to drop these two brand new amazing back wheel lines. So great to see Hiroya is still pushing hard, hitting the rewind again!
Lookback: April – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards
The clocks go forward one hour, that feel good factor that the extra daylight brings, more riding time equals more time filming and documenting what you do. April was a busy month!
Deco’s Chad Degroot kicked off the month and had this to say:
“Since I starting riding my head wants me to learn as much as possible and this includes bars backwards tricks. The beginning of this link I learned this day so to make more smooth flow and no scuffing. The middle has been a gem and great feeling to whip the backend around with no brakes and keep speed. The end is bars backwards and played a huge head game for a bit because I had to push so much momentum to get into the backyard position and pump to keep speed. Real excited to move past the 15 second persona and get onto the longer story of this trick.”
Must Watch! John Yull – Fall
With a lot of what I call the :Video heavy weights” filming for Master of Creativity this year, you can forgive me for thinking the year was kind of done with regard to Must Watch edits and the like. How wrong I was? What stood out the most for me in this new “fall” edit from John Yull was the progression he has made on the power mower saran wrap stall moves that are totally groundbreaking, and of course throw in John’s multiple foot jam decade skills! You have one hell of a Christmas treat, thanks John!
As I like to do with Must watch edits, here are my personal highlights:
00:12: Half lash to foot jam head grab one handed stall to smith out.
00:49: Footjam decade land right foot peg left foot pedal kick to peg wheelie decade out. Very tech!
1:00: Bars backwards saran wrap stall direct to foot jam decade!
1:23: Halflash to regular side smith stall switch to power mower to decade.
1:31: Bar spinning power mower stall one handed to foot jam decade!
1:38: Double foot jam decade with a quick no handed one footed stall thrown in just to throw the difficulty up some, not to mention originality!
2:05: Bars backwards Candy bar saran wrap stall to bars backwards foot jam decade out, one of the wildest clips for sure!
2:17: John is on a death wish here with the banger clip, double foot jam decade with the second decade one handed! WTF!!
Hitting the rewind yet??
Lookback: March – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards
March is always a good month, springtime is coming and after a long winter its nice to be able to ride outside again. Not to mention generally there is a whole lot more content coming through from riders worldwide.
On the first day of March, Paul Chamberlain just dropped a real nice promo for the Down Underground 2016 series, filmed at his local riding spot in Summer Hill. Plenty of awesome hang 5 variations in signature Paul Chamberlain smooth style, well worth watching again.
Must Watch! Matthias Dandois – Raditudes: Endless Possibilities | S3E7
This strikes a different chord than what I usually give the “Must Watch” tag for, I really enjoyed the insight of this video with Matthias talking about contest riding, judging, flat/street, creativity, muscle memory and for the finale he creates a new “NBD” move at 6:43! Turbine two footed backyard jump half backwards decade to boomerang to right handed halfpacker! Grab a cuppa and enjoy this one!
Lookback: February – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards
Nowadays it feels like stuff gets forgotten a few weeks later, so it is always interesting to go back over the year for me. See who did what, as I continue my breakdown of the year today, with February. This year that shall be remembered forever for the tragic death of BMX icon/legend Dave Mirra, RIP.
February began with a nice “Decade teaser” treat from Scott Powell, really like the fire hydrant to foot jam decade direct to back pegs to direct foot jam decade at 00:54 not to mention the upside down decade to xft ice cream lines at 1:03 and 1:15. Looking forward to the Decade Anthology edit Scott is working on…

On February 4th, the BMX World lost the greatest to ever grace our sport. I was lucky enough to share many great memories together with Dave on the Haro team during the late 90’s, a personal hero of mine, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Truly a heartbreaking day!
R.I.P Dave Mirra.
Lookback: January – The 2016 Flatmattersonline Year End Awards
Hello everyone,
I dropped the 2016 Flatmattersonline year end awards just a few days ago, thank you to everyone who has already voted.Today I begin the task of going through the entire year and seeing what went down. In order to keep this as concise as possible, I will posting just what has happened in 2016. (In January there were a lot of edits posted from the previous year…)
Effraim Catlow/Flatmatters Online

Giannis Caternellis Flatmattersonline Interview Part 2
Intro/Interview: Paul Chamberlain, Todd Carter, Rodney Williams, Effraim.
Photos/Trick descriptions: Manthos Ekteman & Giannis Caternellis.
Part 1 of the Giannis Caternellis Flatmattersonline interview caused a positive reaction on the site a few weeks ago. Rather than ask all the questions myself, I discussed with Giannis about asking a few riders to chime in questions. This second part of the interview is focussed on questions from Paul Chamberlain, Todd Carter and Rodney Williams, let’s do this!

Giannis with a move he calls the Michelin.
Must Watch – Giannis Caternellis / Originalidade #5
“Flatland is all about having your own identity, with the use of brakes in a “brakeless world” and trying to learn every single trick on the flat ground I feel like a freestyler, this is my identity. I have free mind, free spirit, free soul, free from any rules. Flatland means hard work, stamina, faith, imagination, creation, originality, progression, values that stands the test of time and are beyond any trends or anything else.”
The following paragraph stood out to me from the recent Part 1 interview I did with Giannis Caternellis from Athens, Greece. We discussed this video before the interviews came out and as timing would have it, it fits in nicely in between Part 1 and Part 2.
Giannis’ new edit strikes a different chord than my usual “Must Watch” edit, his interview and this edit made me think about how “Free” freestyle really is. All these so called rules we make on our riding, don’t touch the tyre, don’t drop the bike, don’t scrape bars, the list goes on. I am as guilty as anyone of this!
I experienced a series of emotions from watching “Originalidade #5”. I laughed, I cringed, I screamed WTF!, I questioned myself “Would I show this in an edit?”, the answer was no. When you think about it, as much as people wax lyrical about you have to original, if you truly are original, when you are original you might upset someone. You can’t do that??
Giannis’ I don’t give a fuck attitude is a lesson to us all, this guy truly lives the freestyle life. The way he documents his limited riding time is as real as gets, you don’t have to like it, he’s living it! I took a lot out of this edit and wanted to share some of my favourite parts with you all. God bless the internet, for we might never see Giannis’ riding otherwise. The power of video parts is so important to our culture. Well done Giannis!
– The opening switch handed fork wheelie two footed no comply crackpacker jump to steam at the 1:01 mark.
– The ice cream side roly poly out at 1:13, WTF! Really??
– Opposite lawn stall to no handed puppet to xft pedal backwards decade out at 1:58!
– One of my favourite clips is the opposite lawn in what looks like his yard, walkover decade to caboose body varial track stand out at 2:51! So good!
– Straight bar Xft hitch pivot to backwards backpacker line at 3:37.
– Wheelie to time machine pedal two caboose back out to pedal time machine, simple idea I haven’t seen before at 4:12.
If you missed Giannis Part 1 Interview!
